Today I had my first truly negative experience with a patron. The children's department I work in has a display up to celebrate Banned Books week, a week that recognizes books that have been challenged by people for various reasons throughout the years. The display is pretty simple - it's one shelf that has a list of the top 10 banned books of all time and three posters displaying the covers of various titles. It's so small compared to other displays that I don't even notice it half the time.
Anyway, today two girls came up to me to ask about finding something. They were with their mother and before they could even ask me whatever it is they wanted to know, she sort of pushed them aside and said she didn't want them speaking to me. They left and she started yelling, and I mean seriously yelling, about the banned books display. She didn't like that her children could so easily be exposed to words like "sex" and "homosexuality." The kicker is that her two daughters were at least 9. In fact, I'd say one could easily have been in middle school. Unless they're being homeschooled, I don't see how they couldn't know these words! It was so bad, that I actually went and found my boss for support. You could hear her bitching at my boss from all over the place - she was so scary. She ended up leaving in a huff after we refused to take down the display and who knows if she'll actually try to complain to our director or not. I'm still shaken up. I mean I'd thought I'd had bad patrons before, but they were nothing like this. Something working with the public just kind of sucks :( It's hard to encounter such negative, ignorant people and not want to say something to them. Having to be polite to them is frustrating!
